Snails Tail

I had these blocks setting around for about 4 years before I finally put them together into a top. I didn't like the colors I had chosen whites and blacks. There was just to much contrast. Almost put them in a box for the good will. Then I thought let's try dyeing it.

So I sewed up the top added a couple rows of border. Made a back and cut some binding. Put it all in some tan Rites dye. And the results were a lot more pleasing to me. Made all the fabrics seam more related. The colors blend better. Guess I just like tamer color schemes. The quilt still needs to be quilted but I finally got it together.

Hi Lizzy, I'm just looking at your blog with my son (age 9) and he wanted me to post a comment because he likes the snails tail and the colours you have used - me too!

I'm so glad you posted your Snail's Trail pix!! I have just embarked on one myself. I'm making it for my older son--he requested grays and blacks!!! I'll be trying to work in an accent color so I can keep my sanity. Yours is gorgeous.

Your Snail Trail blocks looks very good :-) Very smart move to dye the whole top. I'll keep that in mind !

Lizzy,
I would love to see a pic before you dyed it...do you have one? It's awesome!

I think that the overdye helped--might have been too stark otherwise. Maybe that is what you didn't like about it at first?

Very nice!

I don't like the high contrasty black against white either. This worked out very well. Good job!

Never had much success with Rit dye, though - how do you plan to keep it from fading or washing out? I've tie-dyed 100% cotton t-shirts in rit, and the colors didn't last long.

What a fantastic idea, Lizzy. I never would have thought of that..but it sure makes them very appealing. I like the whole relaxed look of the quilt very much!

great idea! I think you have saved many of us from ditching a quilt we don't like now--try dyeing it first! I love the way it looks--and my husband loves those colors, tan and black. That's the only colors he wants in the bedroom, so your Snail Trail would really work for me if you decide you still don't like it! ;)

That Snails Tail quilt is beautiful. It's a perfect guy's quilt. Very smart to have dyed it. I think you could set the color with vinegar don't you think.
