Cake Stand
Here is a cake stand quilt the I finished today. The layout that I started with wasn't working. If the blocks weren't exactly perfect the center strips on the blocks really showed that they weren't straight. After sewing a few blocks together I new it would never look good and line up nice. I also didn't like that some of the baskets would be upside down. Here's a picture I took when I started the quilt.
The blocks look nice alone but not when they were put together. I also didn't have enough scraps to make all the blocks out of 2 fabrics. It would have to be more scrappy. So the project just got put on hold. I had the cake stand blocks mostly done but only a few stitched up with the strips. I took them apart.
I made a new layout using my EQ. And sewed them up the cake stand blocks are 5" square. The quilt is 55 x 45''. The binding will be the green that I used for the sashing corner squares. It looks different from the original plan. But the quilt is cute and soft in color. It will make a nice wall quilt or crib quilt.

My grandmother would have loved this one. It's beautiful. It looks just like her work.
I've always preferred this layout for cake stand blocks - probably for the reasons you mentioned. This looks great, and has a really old fashioned antique look to it.
The quilt turned out beautiful the way you did it! I like it much better than with sashing. So soft and antique looking...
I like your layout much better! A soft, pretty and romantic quilt.
I really like the layout that you used...I much prefer all the cake stands standing up...wouldn't want the cake to fall off :)
I love the quilt!
Your basket quilts are great! I love baskets also. Your red "Cleo's Baskets" is from a Nancy Martin book that I can't lay my fingers on at the moment. Yours is turning out really nice.
GORGEOUS!!!
That is lovely! Such nice soft colors... Great job redesigning it,. as well!
Gorgeous quilt - I like them all facing the same way too :-)
I love the way the final quilt turned out. Better setting anyway. It looks so much bigger than 45 x 55!
Ooohh, it is sooo pretty, soft, delicate and sweet. So happy that you finished it up!
Cheers!
